MASJID MANGKOENEGARAN

Masjid Mangkoenegaran

KANJENG Gusti Pangeran Arya Adipati Mangunegara I, wishing to be acknowledged as the religious leader of the Mangkunegaran’s territory, founded Mangkunegaran Mosque.

Formerly, it was located in Kauman, in the Pasar Legi neighbourhood. For the convinience of the royal family, this mosque was moved to the Banjarsari neighbourhood, that of the palace, so becoming the Royal Mangkunegaran Mosque.

Major renovation of this mosque was undertaken in the reign of Mangkunegara VII who asked a French architect to take part in its redesign.

The present Mangkunegaran Mosque is called Al-Wustho (the centre). The Bapa Penghulu Pura Mangkunegaran (the eminent moslem advisor of Pura Mangkunegaran) Raden Tumenggung K. H. Imam Rosidi gave that name to the mosque in 1949.

This mosque appears distinct for its ornamental Arabic calligraphy of verses quoted from the holy Qur’an found in many parts, such as the gate, the dome, pillars, and Maligin.
