PASAR GEDE HARJDONAGORO

Pasar Gede Hardjonagoro

FORMERLY, Pasar Gede was a small market built on an area of 10.421 square metres. It is located across the road from the governor’s office–now Balai Kota Surakarta (city hall). The building designed by a Dutch architect, Ir. Thomas Karsten, was finished in 1930 and was called Pasar Gede Hardjanagara. It is called Pasar Gede (lit. Big Market) because it consists of large shelters. In its early time, it was the biggest and the greatest market in Surakarta.

Retribution was formerly collected by royal officers of the Surakarta Kingdom. They wore traditional Javanese vestment of kain (wide and long batik material worn from waist down), beskap (jacket-like shirt), and blangkon (traditional cap). The retribution would then be rendered to the Kasunanan Palace.

Pasar Gede is a site which has two separate buildings. Each has two floors. The gate is on the main building where one can see a canopy that reads PASAR GEDE. Each has two floors. The gate is on the main building where one can see a canopy that reads PASAR GEDE.

The architecture of the building appears to be a combination of Dutch and traditional style. In 1947, Indonesian people who fought for independence wrecked it because the Dutch made use of it. The government of Republik Indonesia renovated it in 1949. Some repairs on its roofs were done in 1981. They replaced the old roofs with wooden tiles. The second bulding of Pasar Gede, once used as an office by the DPU, is now the fruit section.
